What is an alternator?
- An alternator is a generator of electric power in a car and is a major component of the vehicle's charging system.
- All cars with an internal combustion engine except for some hybrids have an alternator.
- When an engine is running, the alternator charges the battery and supplies additional electric power for the vehicle electrical systems.
- A system that transforms mechanical energy into electricity. The car alternator is powered by the engine, so it starts charging the batteries and powering the rest of the electrical system when you start the vehicle.
- Dimming of the headlights. One of the signs first observed when the alternator fails is dimming.
- Dimming or slowing down electrical components.
- Battery is running down. The vehicle's battery depends on the alternator to keep it properly charged at all times.

Alternator Function
Alternators are used in modern automobiles to charge the battery and to power the electrical system when its engine is running.
- The alternator consists of a voltage regulator and three main components: The stator, rotor and diode.
- When the battery initially powers the car, the alternator belt, or V-belt, spins the pulley on the alternator, causing the rotor inside the alternator to spin very quickly.
This rotor, which is basically a magnet or group of magnets, is situated inside a nest of copper wires, which are called the stator.
Alternators provide electricity to power the gadgets of the car, such as the lighting and the clock, and charge the batteries. It transforms the mechanical energy produced by the crankshaft in the engine into electrical energy by induction.
What does an alternator do?
The alternator used to be called a motor, and it functions the same way. In this scenario, the petrol engine of the vehicle turns the wheels under the hood that rotates a wheel on the alternator and produces electricity. In theory, this is the same way that the water flowing over the hydroelectric dam and the revolving wheels on the way produces electricity.
How does the alternator charge the battery?
- The battery is charged by an alternator on modern cars, or by a dynamo on earlier ones. Both are types of generator and are driven by a belt from the engine.
- The alternator consists of a stator - a stationary set of wire coil windings, inside which a rotor revolves.
- The rotation of the electromagnet inside the stator coils generates much more electricity inside these coils.
